Herbs to grow indoors: the basics
Kitchen herbs need far more light indoors than most houseplants. Rosemary and lavender want the sunniest window you have; basil and mint cope with a little less, but not with shade.
Use a pot with a drainage hole and water according to the herb: basil and mint like evenly moist soil, while rosemary and lavender prefer to dry out between waterings.
Harvest often and pinch out the tips to keep plants bushy. Basil is grown as an annual and declines once it flowers; mint, rosemary and lavender are perennials that can last for years in a pot.
