Succulents and cacti: the basics
Succulents store water in thick leaves or stems, so they cope with drought far better than with wet soil. Give them the brightest spot you have, ideally a sunny window, and a gritty mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Most rest in winter and need water only every few weeks. Pale, stretched growth leaning toward the window means they want more light.
Soft, translucent or blackening leaves are the classic sign of overwatering. Not every plant here comes from a desert: the Christmas cactus grows on trees in Brazilian forests and wants more water and less sun than the rest.
