Easy houseplants for beginners: the basics

Easy here means forgiving: these plants survive a missed watering, average room humidity and a less than perfect spot. Most problems with them come from too much water, not too little.

Start with a pot that has a drainage hole and water only when the top of the soil is dry. Once you know how fast your home dries a plant out, the rest of this list is hard to kill.
